Please come prepared with a one-minute monologue in the style of the show or other works by Charles Dickens. Memorization is not required. Slides from the script will be provided for cold reads. Actors may be asked to play more than one role. No singing or dancing required.

Great Expectations is based on the Charles Dickens' novel of the same name. The story follows Pip, a young orphan being raised by his sister and her husband. After a childhood of poverty and mistreatment, Pip is unexpectedly gifted an inheritance by an unknown sponsor. With his new wealth and privileges, he gets to experience life outside the marsh he grew up on and become a true gentleman.

Prominent roles and playable ages (some characters will have a child counterpart to begin the story):

Pip (Adolescent / Young Adult) Orphaned boy who grows into a gentleman. Intelligent, sensitive, and ambitious.

Herbert Pocket (Adolescent / Young Adult) Pip’s closest friend and companion in London. Loyal, cheerful, and supportive.

Estella (Adolescent / Young Adult) Miss Havisham’s ward. Beautiful, aloof, and raised to break men’s hearts.

Miss Havisham (50+) A wealthy recluse, still in her wedding gown, consumed by betrayal and bitterness.

Joe Gargery (Adult) Pip’s brother-in-law. A kindhearted blacksmith with simple wisdom.

Mrs. Joe (20s–40s) Pip’s older sister. Harsh, resentful, and quick-tempered.

Magwitch (Adult 40s–60s) A mysterious convict. Rough but ultimately generous.

Biddy (Late teens–30s) Pip’s childhood friend and tutor. Warm, practical, and loyal.

Jaggers (Adult 35–60) A powerful lawyer. Stern, intimidating, and morally ambiguous.
